Pueblo Colorado - What Does it Mean to You? By Sandra Wilson
When you think of Pueblo Colorado, what do you think about? Do you even have any ideas of what to think? Perhaps you would be interested to know that Pueblo is actually famous for some very different reasons.
Pueblo's early history, like so many areas in the United States, began with trading with the local Ute and Apache tribes until a raid caused the trading post to be abandoned. Later on, the area was revived during the Colorado Gold Rush in 1859. Four towns grew in the area that were later consolidated into the one town of Pueblo that grew and has held an fairly stable population of around 100,000 souls, more or less, for the last forty or so years.
One of Pueblo, Colorado's nicknames is the "Steel City", though that nickname is not used so much anymore. A major CF&I steel mill was located on the city's southeast side. This mill was the major source of jobs and a major player on the Pueblo scene for a long time. However, the steel industry woes that began in the 1970s and continuous labor problems have led to its decline and several bankruptcies leading to a change in ownership. The steel mill problems led to a general depression in the area which Pueblo is now, and for the last several years has been climbing above with all the new growth in the area. Pueblo is becoming a revitalized and remarkable town.
Another thing that is famous about Pueblo locally was the Great Flood of 1921. This flood devastated the city and many of the businesses in the downtown area were lost. You can see markers high on the sides of buildings in the area today showing just how bad the flood got. Pictures are also available at the County Courthouse showing the devastation. Perhaps this is one reason the new Historic Arkansas Riverwalk of Pueblo has been the passion of so very many people. It makes a great place for walks or bike rides to enjoy the beauty of the Arkansas River, a major Colorado river. There are even boat rides and a stage for concerts.
But perhaps the thing that Pueblo is most famous for is being the home of four Medal of Honor recipients. Two earned the medal during the Korean War (Carl Sitter and Jerry Murphy). One, William Crawford, earned it during action in WWII. And the last, Drew Dix was awarded the medal for action during the Tet Offensive in Vietnam. For these men, Pueblo, Colorado now holds the title or slogan as the "Home of Heroes" and has been recognized in the Congressional Record as such. Pueblo has more Medal of Honor recipients per capita than any other city in the US.
Maybe all towns have something or even several things to be known or remembered for. All in all, Pueblo is not just some other small U.S. town. Any town that can go through what Pueblo has and still provide so many Medal of Honor recipients...well, maybe there is something to what President Eisenhower said when presenting the medal to Jerry Murphy, "What is it...something in the water out there in Pueblo? All you guys turn out to be heroes!" Maybe now, if you should think of or read about Pueblo Colorado you will have heroes to think about.
